Situated on the Sinai peninsula on the east coast of the Red Sea, Sharm el Sheik is a famed tourist resort. Unlike other Red Sea resorts, however, the town is a mixture of tourism and culture and much more relaxed than some of its contemporaries. With an average of over ten hours of sunlight a year and a temperature that rarely falls below 15 degrees Celsius, it is no surprise that Sharm el Sheikh is so popular. During the 1980s Sharm el Sheik developed from a relatively sleepy and unknown town into one of the major tourist destinations in the world. Major investment from hotel chains like the Ritz-Carlton and the Hyatt have led to Sharm el Sheikh hotels being almost unrivalled for their excellence. To highlight this fact, the town is a centre for many international conferences and political meetings. Perhaps the biggest tourist attraction of Sharm el Sheikh and many other Red Sea locations is the incredible diversity of the water life. There are over 250 coral reefs just off the coast, and thousands of different species of fish. The best way to see these is undoubtedly scuba diving or snorkelling, but if you don''t fancy going underwater, you can always get tickets for a ride on a glass-bottomed boat. Sharm el Sheikh is a tourist destination for nationalities from all over the world, and accordingly has a great mix of restaurants and bars of all different cultures, and all for surprisingly good value for money. One of the greatest appeals of Sharm el Sheikh to those who visit every year is that it is remarkably clean, probably more so than any other tourist destination in the region. In the 1980s the government introduced strict environmental laws, and the coast, the beaches and the town are extremely clean.
