Shopping for a Cheap Electric Guitar - Is it Worth It?

By: Steve Miller

Most folks perceive inexpensive guitars as low quality, poorly crafted guitar. In fact, some people will be unsettled by the fact that it wasn't a US crafted guitar. You may not even consider Korean or Chinese made electric guitars and may never purchase a cheap guitar, until recently.

Many big electric guitar makers have already started selling their electric guitars in Korea, China and India to offer even more affordable electric guitars for the regular guitar player. Not everybody can afford a $2000+ Gibson or Fender guitars and there's a huge market for low-cost electric guitars under $500.

Most of the Epiphone low-cost guitars models which are owned by Gibson are now produced in Korea and China. Kramer, which is another company owned by Gibson makes a lot of their inexpensive instruments in Korea as well. Fender acquired Jackson some years ago, and now most of the Jackson instruments are produced in India and Korea. BC Rich low-cost guitars and several Ibanez guitar models are made in Korea too.

The low cost of labor may also help the production of more affordable electric guitar, but that alone cannot be the only reason for lowering guitar prices.

So, why are some guitars inexpensive and other electric guitars are extremely pricey?

There are several factors determining a electric guitar price.

The first factor for making a electric guitar expensive or cheap is the actual guitar manufacturing process. Was the guitar hand-built or was it made in a highly automated modern electric guitar factory? Hand-made guitars are usually more costly, while the electric guitars coming out from an automated factory are always less expensive because the automated manufacturing procedure does not entail much manual manual labor such as electric guitar building, quality control factor which will govern a guitar price. Is the quality of the material used for building this instrument of the best quality? This can include the woods used for the guitar body and neck, the parts and finish. Less expensive instruments use economical woods like plywood for building the guitar's body, while more expensive instruments use quality woods like mahogany, rosewood or alder.

The third factor for making a electric guitar cheap or expensive is the quality of hardware and electronics that go in the instrument. Cheap guitars typically have low-cost bridge, tuners, and factory pickups. Expensive instruments are crafted with better quality electronics and hardware. For instance the cost of a double humbucking Seymour Duncan pickup may be a much higher price than the stock guitar pickup made in Korea.

Cheap Guitars - Is it worth it to buy one?

It really depends. Not everyone will bond with a cheap electric guitar. If you are expert guitarist and the guitar is your tool of business, then you probably will not want to purchase a cheap electric guitar. Although most inexpensive electric guitars these days have an extremely great quality, professional guitarists prefer hand-made guitars innovated by professional luthiers.

If you do not want to spend several thousands of dollars on a Gibson Les Paul, then you may want to have a look at less expensive electric guitars. Keep in mind that cheap guitars are no longer no-name guitars. You can still purchase Ibanez, Jackson, ESP, Epiphone, Fernandes, BC Rich, Squier, and many more renowned instrument brands for less than $200!

I bought a inexpensive instrument built in Korea by Ibanez for just $199. The axe has a licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, a very great, fast neck and nice tone. This guitar puts the "cheap" and "quality" all in one sentence. My cheap axe is worth much more than what I paid for it, and it's actually as good quality than some American built Fenders I have reviewed.

Would you rather purchase the cheapest US crafted Fender Stratocaster model for $500 or would you rather purchase a Japanese made Jackson, with Duncan Designed pickups, super fast neck and a Floyd Rose Tremolo system for $250? This conclusion of cheap / expensive electric guitar is all yours.
