A big annual holiday can often be more of a disappointment than anything else, after you''ve spent so long waiting for it without much of a break in the middle. Having that fortnight getaway in Brazil could be an unforgettable experience, but unfortunately you''ve got to wade through the rest of the year to get to it.

But that''s only the case if you save up all your days for one annual blow out, of course. As long as you make good use of bank holidays and maybe take out a Monday here or a Thursday there, you''ll end up with long weekends scattered across the year, giving you small bursts of relaxation to stop you from burning out and going completely brain dead at work.

Getting away to a city can be a great way to spend a three or four day period of holiday. City breaks are absolutely perfect if you want to combine a little bit of culture with a little bit of chill, not to mention the fact that you could make savings by using up air miles, or booking a flight and hotel combination deal.

Venice is perhaps the first place that comes to your mind when you think of classy city break destinations. It really doesn''t need any introduction: with centuries of culture and history behind it visible in both its museums and its architecture, it rivals even Paris for the title of ''most romantic European holiday destination''.

Here you can experience public transport in a way that you never have before, as you glide effortlessly through canals in that famous Venetian vessel, the gondola. Furthermore, you can see works by some of the foremost figures of the Italian Renaissance, such as Carpaccio, da Vinci, and the Bellinis, all of whom have pieces on display in the Gallerie dell''Accademia.

The main drawback of Venice is, unsurprisingly, that it''s not cheap; a great place to visit if you''re feeling flush, you could also leave the city with a hole in your pocket. If you still want culture and canals, though, a wonderful (and more affordable) alternative is Bruges, the medieval Belgian city.

The centre of the town is so incredibly historic that it''s all preserved as a UNESCO site, which shows just how special a place it is. It''s like one giant and beautiful museum of medieval culture, with must-see sights such as the Basilica of the Holy Blood (containing a vial thought by some to hold drops of Jesus Christ''s blood), and Sint-Salvator Cathedral, from the top of which you can see for many miles.

With these and hundreds more destinations, why use up all your days of holiday in one go when you could eke them out visiting Europe''s most stunning cities? For many of these places, a long weekend is just the right amount of time you need to get a feel of the place, see some sights, and, above all, relax and recharge.
