Sight-seeing in Paris

By: Sal Greet

Paris is the capital of France, and a city famous for its romantic ambience. There are many famous attractions to enjoy in this, the largest city in France - here is an outline of just of few of them.

The Eiffel Tower is probably the most well known of these attractions. The Eiffel Tower rises an imposing 300m over the city, and therefore serves as both a handy landmark when navigating Paris, as well as affording a fantastic panorama of the city for those bold enough to take the stairs or elevator to the top.

The Arc de Triomphe was built in 1836 to commemorate the victories of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The Arc de Triomphe carries the engraved names of all the generals who served under Napoleon, and still features as the centrepiece to many large state ceremonies.

The Louvre Museum holds a world famous collection of art by giants of the art world such as Michelangelo; and Leonardo De Vinci, whose Mona Lisa is closely guarded within (as fans of the bestselling Da Vinci Code will know). The original building was a royal palace, and could be viewed as a work of art in itself, and this building has been developed and augmented with some striking modern architecture ? the latest addition being the glass pyramid. As well as paintings, there is an extensive collection of sculpture. The Louvre can be recommended for experienced art buffs and curious first-timers alike.

Notre Dame Cathedral is an example of classic Gothic architecture, and was one of the first Gothic Cathedrals built in Europe ? construction began in 1163. The cathedral is situated on a site that has been used for worship for thousands of years by several different religions, perhaps contributing to the unique atmosphere within.

The Sacre-Couer basilica is another famous piece of Parisian architecture in the Montmartre area of the city. Sitting atop a hill, the Sacre Couer is an impressive building featuring a dome that stands 83m above the top of Montmartre Hill.

Most people will be familiar with the cabaret glamour of the Moulin Rouge, thanks to the recent Hollywood film by Baz Lurman. The Moulin Rouge is a long established cabaret venue, and hosts a dinner show packed with gaudy glamour and showgirls.

If you will be taking a short break in Paris, but want to cram in as many of the above attractions as possible, attraction tickets can now be booked in advance from tour operators such as Thomas Cook to save you valuable time when you arrive in the city.
