Smart Phones

By: Porter Ivrin

As Christmas approaches the battle for the attention of customers goes into overdrive and nowhere is the competition more fierce than in the mobile phone market.

So why are phones so important this year? The major reason is that they can do more than ever. There's as much processing power in your pocket now as there was in most computers no more than a decade ago.

Of course, phones have been able to do a lot of different things for a long time, phones that can play the radio, or MP3s or take pictures are not particularly new. The different is that phones are no longer just about the software that is written onto their chips.

Phone providers have been working on mobile internet for ages now, and it's just about reached the stage where it can really handle the traffic produced by millions of smart phones operating the internet at the same time.

This has, then, opened the door to the ingenuity of the people who live on the internet. If you can conceive an idea that might be useful, there's probably someone out there who will want it on their phone.

So, as the demand for smart phones grows, so the companies who create mobile phones increase their efforts. One company is Samsung, and their latest effort, the Genio Touch White, looks like it might be something of a success this Christmas.

Choosing a phone isn't easy, and choosing a smart phone isn't easy at all, but one of the secret's behind the prospective success of the Genio is disarmingly simple. Lots of phones can do lots of things these days, and the days when just being able to change the cover might seem a long time ago. Samsung, however, have made the relatively safe bet that whilst everyone would like a phone that can do everything, more people would like a phone that can do everything and that you can change colour when you feel like it.

Inevitably, the success of a handset rests with the providers as well as the manufacturers, it's all very well having a great phone but if you can't call anyone without spending hundreds of pounds, you're not going to use it very much. Still, paired up with Vodafone, Samsung have got a great chance this Christmas of getting a significant portion of the market.
