Those with an interest in wildlife and plant life around the Common can stop by the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre, which offers regular guided wildlife walks and information. Southampton is home to several impressive museums, with the most popular being the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Archaeology. The latter, houses one of the finest archaeological collections in the UK, and the building was once part of the city defences too. Learn all about Southampton, its people and its history right back to the Roman period at the Museum of Archaeology. There are artefacts galore, including fine jewellery, pottery and ceramics, making this one of the finest archaeological museums in the country. The Southampton Maritime Museum pays particular attention to the shipbuilding heritage of the city, including a collection dedicated to the most famous ocean liner in history, the Titanic. You will also see a fantastic model of the Southampton docks that were built in 1939 for the New York World Fair.
