Stay stylish during pregnancy Article

By: Wilber Gjokaj

Looking good might be the last thing on your mind when you find out you're pregnant, but after the good news sinks in you'll probably be left wondering how your body is going to change over the next nine months. The good news is that it doesn't have to be all swollen ankles and stretch marks ? with the right know-how, you can make sure that you look and feel great all through your pregnancy.

The most important aesthetic tool for every pregnant woman is her wardrobe. If you carry on wearing the same old clothes then it won't be long before things begin to get a little strained. On the other hand, if you're at all fashion conscious then the idea of squeezing yourself into traditional maternity wear probably doesn't appeal.

Fortunately, this is a dilemma that has been fully appreciated and exploited by UK fashion designers. Nowadays the high street offers a wide range of maternity collections ? many of them so stylish that you'll find yourself the envy of non-pregnant women everywhere. New Look, in particular, has a great selection of maternity clothes, so you can carry on looking good without spending a fortune.

When choosing maternity wear, go by the same rules as you would follow normally. Pick out a few basic pieces ? items that you know you'll want to wear day in, day out for the next nine months ? and then accessorise with attractive extras. A good pair of jeans is always a must, and go with floaty tops and hip-skimming dresses for evening wear.

Remember, however great any maternity collection looks, there's no point in rushing out and buying your whole pregnancy wardrobe at once. Your figure is likely to undergo significant changes between your first and final trimesters, so stage your buying carefully. You don't want to end up with a closet full of unusable maternity wear before you've even had the baby.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to look after your image during pregnancy. Glowing skin is almost as important as an attractive wardrobe. Regular home facials are a good start, although make sure that all the products you use are suitable for pregnant women. You should also get plenty of extra sleep and drink as much water as you can to help prevent water retention.

Many women worry about their figures during pregnancy, but you needn't put on a huge amount of additional weight. Your baby only needs an extra 300-500 calories per day. Try to get this through nutritious food such as fruit, vegetables and pulses, rather than snacking on crisps and biscuits.

And finally, as a certain BBC presenter would say, make sure you keep on smiling. A positive mental attitude will give you an inner glow that no amount of preening and pampering can achieve. It shouldn't be too hard to keep a smile on your face - after all, you've got plenty to look forward to!
