Summer means flowers

By: Nita Hannibal

What with the dramatic rise in temperature and the long, drawn out days, the summer has good associations for a lot of us, and in many ways the kinds of things that spring to mind (afternoons in the park, barbeques that take up whole days) almost make the winter months bearable.

The kinds of flowers you''ll see on stalls and in shops are also particularly good around these few months. The natural world is in bloom in a truly spectacular way, and it''s never boring either: what with hundreds of species of flower appearing everywhere, not to mention their various different strains and colours, it is at this time that nature shows itself to be artistically-minded.

Indeed, this is an excellent time for giving flowers to people, whether they''re close to you or not. You can get some excellent selections from many online retailers, and through their extensive and well-established networks, many of them can deliver goods around the world as well as the UK.

Don''t just confine yourself to just buying the flowers and sending them to people, though, but see if you can get out and have a look at some yourself. Thanks to the multitude of nurseries and tended public gardens around the country, the chances are that you won''t be far from one of these wonderful and well looked after institutions.

Perhaps the best of these is London''s Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in Richmond towards the southernmost end of the city. With a variety of different focuses and installations there at all times, Kew Gardens adheres to seasonal change at the same time as getting plenty of interesting stuff going.

The guided tours on offer there give you a detailed description of what each plant is, where it comes from, and how it survives, and you''ll soon realise that while it is a beautiful and stunningly colourful institution, there are things of much more interest going on here than just putting flowers on display.

The biologists and directors of Kew have showed that their influence is not limited to the Botanic Gardens, as they contribute to major research on a national scale. But indeed it is to the species cultivated within the Gardens that they devote the majority of their time and effort, conserving flowers that might otherwise be in danger from environmental damage.

So while the products you can buy at florists'' online or from street vendors might be able to brighten up your home or make a good gift, you might find that by opening up your mind to the natural world of plants, you can appreciate what fresh kinds of sights that nature brings with each passing season.
