Sydney: A World-Beating City

By: Malik Arichabala

But unlike London or New York, those other most prominent of world cities, Sydney offers visitors more options for enjoyment because of its surrounding area, especially if sun is on the menu. Sydney's beaches are famous in their own right, with Bondi Beach perhaps vying for the title of most famous beach in the world, and as such Sydney can offer visitors a city holiday and beach holiday in one, much like Barcelona can in Europe. Sydney is the capital of the New South Wales province, which is home to 780 national parks within its vast expanse, ranging from beautiful coastline to arid outback, through the valleys and peaks of sub-tropical rainforest which separate the dry interior of Australia from its verdant coast. In these areas, activities like trekking, mountain biking, and climbing provide a holiday to suit the more adventurous traveler and the all-out adrenalin junkie.

Getting to Sydney is in some ways difficult, because of the length of the journey, but not as difficult, or expensive for that matter, as it once was. The journey is around 24 hours nowadays, with a refueling stop in the Far East necessary, although in the near future it is expected that a new generation of airliners will make the trip possible non-stop in 20 hours. Remember to take out appropriate travel insurance for any trip to Oz, taking special care to ensure that the cover for cancellations is sufficient- for a trip to such a distant destination (which usually means a longer trip as well), the cost per person could be greater than the policy provides.
