THe Brighton Experience

By: Caron Kristan

The seaside town of Brighton has been a busy port-town for most of England''s recorded history. Its status as a popular tourist destination began in the eighteenth century when it became a health resort for those looking to ?take the sea breeze?, the advent of the railway then opened it up to a whole new generation of day-trippers and the town''s popularity has only grown since then. For a true glimpse into the quintessential British seaside resort then you need look no further than Brighton.

Brighton has excellent railway links with London, meaning if you''re travelling abroad you need simply land at one of London''s three major airports and then pop on a train to the town. There are also good train links from Brighton to other areas of Britain, regular coaches and buses can also be used. When it comes to getting around the town itself it''s a good idea to try and walk as much as possible: this is the best way to truly soak up the town''s atmosphere and to scope out other places you might like to visit.

Brighton''s hotels range from tiny little Bed and Breakfasts to large, luxurious mansions and everything in between. Boutique hotels are a great choice for those looking for something really special; Drakes Hotel for example offer contemporary, luxurious rooms and exemplary service, whilst the Barcelo Brighton Old Ship Hotel has one of the most impressive frontages of any venue within the city.

If you''re looking for something a little cheaper however there are lots of budget hotels and hostels dotted about the city; you can find information about these on pretty much any website offering hotel deals.

When it comes to finding stuff to amuse yourself within Brighton you won''t be stuck for ideas ? indeed, the main problem you''ll have will probably be fitting everything in! One of Brighton''s most famous attractions is its art scene; the Brighton Festival''s Art Display is probably the best time to get an overview. Another option is to check out the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.

Another way to see the range of art available in Brighton is to pay a little visit to its Artists Quarter, a stretch of houses which lies between Brighton''s two piers. These converted fisherman''s houses have been turned into gallery and studio spaces. You can wander along and watch the artists at work; you might even be able to pick up a unique piece of art for your home!

Brighton''s status as a University city means it has a great nightlife you can enjoy even if you aren''t a student. There are the usual range of clubs, pubs and bars; if you visit these on week nights there are often student deals on drinks available to all.

There is also a great live music scene in Brighton - the Brighton Concorde, Brighton Dome and Brighton Centre are just a few venues. For quieter nights putting the world to rights over a drink then Brighton has over 300 pubs; the Regency Tavern offers fantastic, ornate decoration whilst you can guarantee a good pint in the more traditional Cricketers.
