Taking a look at the transformation of Castlefield

By: Trish Jacque

The Castlefield district of Manchester has seen a huge transformation occur over the past decade or so, shaking off its past as an industrial estate to become one of the most sought after residential areas of the city. Spanning Deansgate to the Irwell river, Castlefield is home to some popular tourist spots and some of the most famous sights in Mnanchester.

Among the attractions in the Castlefield district is the studios of Granada Television, home to the much loved Coronation Street, the first railway station in the world, the first of the canals to be built in Britain, the Bridgewater and the Museum of Science and Industry too.

Many of the developments in the Castlefield district have been the result of works by the urban Splash company. They were among the first to undertake the conversion of industrial warehouses into modern luxury apartments and they have played a key part in transforming the area.

Having been carrying out warehouse conversions around Castlefield since 2000, the original Urban Splash development was Britannia Mills. Its beautiful setting next to the Bridgewater Canal was then followed by another canalside development, the Boxworks complex.

Projects that were constructed from scratch by Urban Splash include the canalside Timber Wharf, and the innovative MoHo (Modular Homes) building, most of which was constructed off site in order to cut costs and thus make quality housing more affordable.

Some other firms have also built large developments in the area, such as Castle Quay, which was the first warehouse conversion in Castlefield, and Redrow Homes Vie, an ultra modern block of luxury flats by the canalside.

A modern conversion housed within a truly historic building is the St Georges Church development created by Burkes Developments. This truly impressive gothic church has been renovated to include more than 20 spacious luxury apartments.

St Georges Island is a stunning new development by Dandara, which can boast waterside apartments with full length balconies, landscaped gardens, and a concierge service that is available twenty four hours a day.
