Taking your family to Menorca

By: Jarrett Altrogge

The Spanish Balearic Islands have been popular among British holidaymakers for decades now. The smallest of these islands is Menorca, or Minorca as it is also known. Its location in the wonderfully warm Mediterranean Sea makes it popular among families too.

When travelling with very young children, the shorter your travel time the better, as children can easily become bored and grouchy being stuck in a plane for hours. The fact that Menorca is only a two hour pane ride away from London is one of the things that helps this island to stand out as one of the most popular holiday destinations among British families.

With its Mediterranean location, Menorca sees beautiful warm weather almost all year round. Be aware that if you travel during the peak summer months, temperatures can reach more than 40C, which younger children may find uncomfortable. During spring and at the end of summer temperatures are at a more manageable 25C on average.

As this is a popular island in the summer, and due to its relatively small size, Menorca can become very crowded if you choose to travel at the height of summer. Choosing a less busy time to travel will not only mean more room on the beach and in the bars and restaurants, but it will usually be cheaper for you to holiday then too.

The Balearic Islands have something of a party reputation thanks to the popularity of Ibiza among nightclubbers. But Menorca is a more subdued affair and is far more family-oriented with plenty of family resorts to choose from.

One of the best beaches is located at Binibeca. This is on the south eastern corner of Menorca. The white sands, coves, small fishing village and wide selection of shops and bars make this an ideal family location - and it is only a 20 minute drive from the airport too.

While a lot of Spanish holiday resorts have been heavily built up, with lots of high rises spoiling the coastal views, Menorca has kept its building expansion under control. As a result, you will find a more scenic island full of views that make it easy to take beautiful family snapshots.

Although there is a good public transportation system around Menorca, largely thanks to the booming tourist trade, if you have a family in tow, it can be far easier to rent a car instead. This saves you having to lug around your baggage, and you are free to travel where you want and where you want when exploring this beautiful island. Car hire in Menorca is easy to arrange, as there are lots of car hire firms that cater to families on holiday here.
