What comes to mind when you think of Tenerife? Usually a plethora of clich?s including sun, sand and sea right? Well these clich?s are in fact a reality. Even in winter, this Canary Isle gets at least 20 sunny days per month making Tenerife one of the sunniest holiday hot spots in Europe. The island is well endowed with beautiful beaches. The northern beaches around Puerto de la Cruz are quieter and more rugged, whilst the south has long stretches of sand, including some of the black volcanic variety around Playa de las Americas and its surrounding areas, but be prepared to share your towel space with thousands of other sun-seekers. The sea and all the activities it offers is why hordes of tourists from all over Europe flock here each year. Apart from the obvious activity of swimming, you can surf, windsurf, sail and scuba dive and because it stays warm and sunny year round, Tenerife is perfect any time of year, making it a perfect winter-sun destination for us sun-starved Brits. Most people have heard of Playa de las Americas and the surrounding towns such as Los Gigantes, Los Cristianos and Caleta. These are the big tourist destinations that although might be fun to party in aren't everyone's cup of tea. If you want to see the real side to this beautiful island, you need to head north. The town of Orotava and its surrounding villages are stunning. Located in its namesake valley, the old town area is awash with Renaissance mansions, churches and convents making it well worth a visit, before heading on to the seaside colonial town of Puerto de la Cruz. Traditional Spanish flair is combined effortlessly with cosmopolitan chic and cobbled streets make unassuming homes for modern boutiques. Whale and dolphin spotting boat trips can be arranged from here too and you are pretty likely to catch a glimpse of these beautiful mammals in their natural environment. Finally, to feel that you have really escaped the UK, go to a place that is more akin to Mars than Europe. The Parque Nacional de las Canadas del Teide is a volcanic park where little grows due to the infertile soil and harsh conditions ? very dry and hot in the summer and snow-covered and windy come winter. But don't let this put you off a visit to this spectacular landscape. You can hike to Spain's highest summit Mount Teide or if this seems a little too much to bare, there is a cable car which boasts breathtaking views and is considerably easier than hiking.
