Spain''s Canary Islands are hugely popular tourist destinations, and Tenerife is the largest of them. A quick glimpse of a photo of Tenerife explains some of its popularity: the island boasts beautiful landscapes, bustling culture and fantastic beaches. These are only a few of the things which make Tenerife such a special holiday destination, here are a few more. There are two big international airports in Tenerife, the Reina Sofia, or Tenerife South Airport, in the south, and Tenerife North Airport, also called Los Rodeos, near Santa Cruz. Their popularity means it''s almost always possible to get a flight to or from the island; cheap deals are also often available so shop around. The most convenient option when exploring the island itself is to rent a car so you can go off the beaten track. Accommodation-wise Tenerife has everything you''d expect in terms of hostels, luxury hotels and everything in between. If you''re looking for something a bit different then it may be worth renting a villa, these are particularly well suited to those who are travelling in large groups, and offer you large levels of privacy. Tenerife is a particularly mountainous region, so if you''re interested in hiking through some awe-inspiring scenery it may be the place for you. To avoid the crippling heat of the summer midday sun though it is worth travelling in the early morning or evening. An area in the central highlands called Las Ca?adas offers some particularly striking views. If you''re more interested in a relaxing holiday then Tenerife boasts many beautiful beaches where you can lie back and soak up the rays. The beaches on the island''s northern coast are particularly notable for their black, pebbly sand (a remnant of the volcano); many of them also have beach bars so you can be guaranteed an ice-cold drink whatever time of day. Some of the biggest attractions Tenerife has to offer are its festivals. The twice-yearly (February and August) Holiday of the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands, features performances on the beach, and people travelling from all over the island to Villa Mariana de Candelaria, a city on the southeast part of the island. Tenerife''s most famous festival however is the Carnival of Santa Cruz, a carnival rated second only to Rio De Janiro''s in terms of popularity. Because of this, you are advised to book flights and accommodation early, the festival takes place in early February. This island-wide celebration involves local performers parading through the streets of Tenerife''s cities. Tenerife''s festivals are great if you want to get a taste of authentic island life; however they are only one of the many delights Tenerife has to offer. It is possible to return to Tenerife year after year and never get bored, the atmosphere, the culture, the beautiful surroundings all make Tenerife one of the world''s best holiday destinations.
