The BlackBerry essential

By: Porter Ivrin

A basic, no strings attached, pay as you go mobile can be quite an attractive prospect. You needn''t worry about getting the regular bills or that moment when you receive the monthly bank statement, because you''ll have been in complete control of everything you''ve spent on your phone.

But this kind of simplicity leads to technological drawbacks as well. Generally speaking, a pay as you go handset isn''t going to be anywhere near as cutting edge as a smart-phone will be, or if it is then it will cost a bomb to buy upfront. And there''s no way of saying for sure whether a monthly bill will actually even cost more than a pay as you go phone.

Getting on board a pay monthly scheme isn''t necessarily tantamount to spending a whole lot more on your phone, and you''ll often be able to get a brand new model for free with the contract. But the really tough decision comes when you''re actually choosing which deal to sign up for, or what kind of phone you want to be using.

The diversity of Blackberries on offer is not to be sniffed at. Some models come with physical QWERTY keyboards and number pads or full touch screens, while yet others look like more normal, everyday handsets, and they all share similar resources and aspects.

Internet access is naturally a key aspect to look for when getting a smart-phone, and all these models are pretty hot on that. The fact that you can hook up your email, Facebook and Twitter accounts to alert you when you receive anything show that it''s as much a social phone as an important work tool.

These days, people want more and more from their mobiles, and smart-phones are stepping up to the challenge. What''s particularly impressive is how they''ve come on recently in terms of their multimedia capabilities: a phone bought even just a couple of years ago will pale by comparison to a more recent model.

You can see the developments in the amount of memory a smart-phone will have: they''re often ''bigger'' than many personal music devices, some of them clocking in at 16GB. Camera technology has improved as well, and quite a few handsets have HD photo and video abilities, as well as plenty of room for MP3s.

If you''re worried about the regular expense of a pay monthly contract being too great, then sticking to a pay as you go deal could be your best option. But when you look at all the benefits you could get from a potentially free-of-charge smart-phone, it''s worth having another think about what you could gain from going with pay monthly.
