The Boston Experience

By: Caron Kristan

The largest city in New England and one of the most historic and influential cities across the whole of the United States of America, Boston is a fascinating place to head off to for a trip. With so many museums and monuments to explore, as well as great artistic highlights on show all the time, not to mention its proximity to Cambridge just across the Charles River and home to Harvard and MIT, it is no wonder that millions flock to the city every single year.

Boston of course played an important role in the founding days of the United States. You can go on the 4 kilometre Freedom Trail walking tour of the town which takes in sixteen different historic sites, beginning at Boston Common and ending at the USS Constitution. You''ll get to see the old State House and Paul Revere''s House among many other significant sights.

For a taste of some of the cultural highlights that Boston has to offer, there are so many places from which to choose. The Museum of Fine Arts is renowned the world over: Boston''s most comprehensive art museum and a prestigious establishment in the US, it brings together under one roof French Impressionist pieces with collections of Egyptian and Japanese art, ancient Greek and Roman work, as well as print collections from the States.

If you want to explore the retail joints around the city, then the eight blocks of high-end boutiques, hair salons and galleries along Newbury Street make for a great day out. Whether you want to flash the cash on something good to take home or simply sit with a coffee watching the college students and urban professionals on the go, as well as witnessing the buskers and street performers around for your entertainment.

Boston Common and the adjacent Public Gardens are perfect spots for visitors, especially in the warmer season when it really does light up. America''s oldest public park, here you can see the world''s shortest suspension bridge, enjoy a ride on the famous Swan Boats, or simply lay down on the grass in some very nice surroundings.

Across on Beacon Street you''ll find the bar from the famous US sitcom ''Cheers''. It is of course always packed with tourists. For more freedom take a walk over the open areas of the Common east of Charles Street.

Fenway Park is renowned to sports addicts across the globe. As the home of the legendary Boston Red Sox, it is high on many visitors'' itinerary. The old ground is still used commonly today for major league games, one of which you may even be able to see live. However matches are predictably always packed, so if you don''t see any action live you should still go along for a look around the stadium.

Boston offers so much to its visitors. If you head over there you''ll be immersed straight away in one of America''s greatest and most historic cities.
