The Edinburgh experience

By: Caron Kristan

Edinburgh is Scotland''s capital city, and also of one of the country''s most entertaining holiday destinations. The city''s beautiful architecture, rich culture and fascinating history are just a few of its attractions; here is a guide to some of the rest.

Edinburgh''s location and excellent travel-links means many holiday goers use it as a base from which to explore Scotland. Edinburgh airport is Scotland''s busiest and internal and international flights leave and arrive here regularly.

There are also regular trains running from Edinburgh to other major Scottish cities like Glasgow; it''s also a short drive to the Scottish borders where you can take in some truly stunning natural scenery. Within Edinburgh itself buses and taxis provide relatively cheap and simple means to get around; the best way to see the city though is walking so you can soak up the beautiful surroundings and fantastic atmosphere.

Edinburgh''s hotels are as varied as you''d expect from such a major city. For the traveller on a budget there are some great hostels spread throughout the city. One of the best selling points of hostels are the atmosphere there: living in a relaxed environment with lots of other people of a similar age and situation means there are lots of opportunities to make new friends.

However, if decadence is what you''re after then any of the hotels owned by the Luxury Edinburgh are worth looking at. A few of the available options include the Howard, the Witchery Suites or Dundas Castle.

Edinburgh''s rich historical past makes itself felt in the wide range of attractions within the city. To really get a feel for its history it might be worth going on one of the guided tours ? these are often grouped around a theme, for example ghost tours, and they provide an intriguing glimpse into the city''s past. Atop a giant hill in the city centre lies Edinburgh Castle, which is another must-see attraction. Inside the castle, enjoy the mix of luxurious restored furnishings and scandalous history.

To soak up a bit of Edinburgh''s fantastic atmosphere then just take a wander along its famous Royal Mile. This street is comprised of beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings and is also one of Edinburgh''s foremost shopping districts, meaning you can mix your architecture with a little retail therapy.

If you''re flexible on when you come to Edinburgh then it''s a really good idea to try and visit during August so you can enjoy the Edinburgh Festival. This is a festival full of comedy, drama, music and theatre; it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
