Evoking the spirit of the Industrial Revolution to many who have not truly explored the city, Leeds is a successful example of a northern location that has been able to regenerate itself and come to be known as a capital for retail, leisure, nightlife, and indeed important sectors of the economy. The many new hotels that have been built in recent years have also made it a popular tourist destination. If you pay a visit to the city, you''ll be able to explore its great industrial history. In museums such as the Armley Mills you''ll learn about what it was that made Leeds and other industrial powerhouses so successful. The Armley Mills museum is further renowned for the first moving pictures of any place in the world, dating back over a century. Worth checking out is the stunning Royal Armouries Museum, set in a great, quintessentially modern building near the centre of town. Housing a collection of pieces that once were kept in the Tower of London, it has a great deal on show. Go at the right time and you may even get to see real jousting in the Tiltyard. Leeds is also well known for its nightlife, and with one of the biggest student populations in the country there are literally hundreds of bars, restaurants and clubs, and a thriving live music scene. If you''re visiting during the summer months it''s definitely worth looking out for what''s going on at the Civic Theatre, which has a large outdoor screen mounted on the side of it. Millennium Square is another good place to check out, it hosts seasonal events such as the Christmas market and gigs during the summer. Next to the Square are the Mandela Gardens, which during the summer are a lovely green space in the heart of the city and a great place to spend an afternoon relaxing. When it comes to finding a place to stay in Leeds, you''re really spoilt for choice, with hotels suiting many tastes and any budget. You may even find yourself a perfect base to go and look further afield, with York only a half hour away by rail, as well as the striking landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and villages like Hebden Bridge always popular and with good reason. It''s definitely worth a short trip to Hebden Bridge, a beautiful little village in the heart of the Dales, and absolute paradise on a sunny day.
