The Limassol experience

Although officially owned by Greece, Cyprus has an identity all of its own. It has a turbulent history and it draws cultural influence from Europe as well as North Africa and the East. What is immediately obvious however, is the sheer beauty of the place. Cyprus is a real gem, nestled in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Limassol, the second largest city on the island, in part is chic and cosmopolitan. One side of this city is the modern, rather overly touristic site, which is perfect for beach lovers and families looking for a hassle free beach break, but doesn''t have mountains of Cypriot charm.

But the other, less visited part is the old town around the old fishing harbour and former Turkish quarter. Here there are old churches, monuments, quaint yet stylish cafes and restaurants, boutique shops and upmarket bars all skirting old and winding streets and squares, making the area immensely attractive.

For kids, there are two fantastic water parks, Wet ''n'' Wild and Fasouri that will keep everyone, young and old, entertained for hours.

The city is full of activities to get stuck into, but if you have the chance it''s well worth getting outside the city to the medieval town of Kourion. Dating back to the 12th century BC this ancient settlement is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Europe. There is a large amphitheatre on-site that is perfect for watching a concert during the summer.

A little more than five miles from Limassol is Kolossi Castle. This was a command post of the Knights Templar and later the Knights Hospitaller. Plenty of richly-decorated remains of the castle can still be seen, and partial reconstruction connects the keep, basilica and aqueduct, much of which is still decorated with original fleurs-de-lys.

If the idea of seeing a genuine Acropolis intrigues you, one can be found just two miles to Limassol''s east, complete with fortress, marketplace, and temples dedicated to the ancient Greek Gods Aphrodite, Hercules and Adonis. Gorgeous vistas abound in this part of the island, particularly at the time of day when the sun is sinking and lending the water a crimson tint.

It''s not hard to see why the beach in Cyprus is so widely coveted, but considering how busy some of them get, it''s worth considering the island''s options in full. So avoid the crowds and large-scale developments and make for the long-stretch of coastline that runs from Limassol to Larnaca. It is largely unspoiled and there are many places of interest along the way.
