If you are looking for a holiday where your main activity is lazing away on a beach, seemingly constructed by leisure gods who chose the whitest, finest sand, seawater that is sheer, gleaming and warm and coconut palms to frame the whole scene, then Punta Cana is your destination. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is home to the largest all-inclusive resort industry in the world. Luxury, four- and five-star hotels line the beaches, of which there are many, whilst golf courses rub shoulders with the alluring waters of the Caribbean. By day you will sip rum cocktails on the beach, and by night you will sip rum cocktails at the bar. The place is unbelievably romantic, even despite mass tourism. So most people coming here are loved-up newlyweds or couples looking to ignite more romance into their relationship, and they inevitably do. However, there is more to this paradisiacal island than just palm-fringed beaches and world-class golf courses. Much of which will be appealing to more than just the honeymoon crowd too. ''Small but perfectly formed'' is the best way to describe the Dominica Republic, as it is one of the Caribbean''s most diverse islands. Bio-diversity ranges from virgin alpine woods, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps to cultivated savannas, deserts and all manner of ecosystems in between, including the Caribbean''s highest and lowest points. The island likes to preserve its astounding natural environment, so thus they now have eco-tourism down to a t. Cultural diversity is just as rich. Santo Domingo, the capital, is the pulsating heart of the island. Cobbled colonial streets, street art speaking droves on decades of oppression and political turmoil sit harmoniously beside modern cafes and bars as multi-cultural and cosmopolitan as those in Miami or St Tropez. Because the island is so small, villages are surprisingly near to the city, however life is completely different. In these villages, little has changed in 100 years. The clothes have changed and the music has a heavier baseline, but otherwise you can still see fishermen hauling their catch on the coast, and women singing through day on farms akin to the plantations of old. Cabarete is the place to go if you are an adrenaline junkie. Sitting pretty on the northern coast, the town has developed an industry based purely on its wind; it is the major kite surfing and windsurfing destination of the island, if not the entire Caribbean. Seafood here is also some of the island''s best too.
