The Rome experience

The glorious Italian capital of Rome is one of the world''s most famous cities. Its iconic landmarks are recognised almost anywhere. Visitors come from all around the globe in order to see for themselves the majestic sights, experience the captivating romantic culture, and indulge in the enormous sense of history and heritage that the place has to offer.

Rome''s incredible depth of history is on show all around, wherever you wander. Moreover the sublime climate, so typical of the Mediterranean, makes it an ideal location to spend a break on the continent.

Most people find that the best time to pay a visit is earlier before the peak of summertime. Some visitors prefer to go in May or June, or later on in September, rather than in high tourist season when it is very hot, ver busy, and prices rise dramatically.

Rome is best known for its majestic imperial monuments like the Colosseum and the Circus Maximus. However its green spaces are highly under-recognised, and provide some splendid spots where you can while away the time at the end of a busy day exploring the city. Head to the Villa Celimontana up the hill behind the Colosseum for a perfect retreat, less well known among tourist visitors who flock to the busiest places.

Another place to spend an evening, though it is slightly more crowded, is Isola Tibernina, the island in the middle of the Tiber. The island is quite small, but is full of small bars from which you can buy cocktails and walk along the shore of the island.

At the height of the tourist season there is an outdoor cinema that is generally quite cheap to enter. Cars are not allowed on the island, which after a day traversing the streets of Rome is a welcome blessing.

You won''t be able to drive on Isola Tibernina as cars are prohibited. This of course makes the atmosphere much more serene, which you''ll certainly notice after having to navigate your way across the busy, frenetic roads of Rome all through the day. Not far from Trastevere where many of the city''s hotels can be found, it is a fantastic place to go to get away from the main tourist spots.

Rome is a fantastic city to visit, but many people who go only experience the major tourist locations (and there are a lot of them) without getting any taste of Italian culture, with just a little exploring you can get away from the tourist crowds and get an experience of Rome that is more than just the fantastic architecture and history and enjoy a truly fantastic holiday.
