The Sousse experience

By: Caron Kristan

A city in Tunisia, Sousse lies on the shore of the Mediterranean Ocean. This location is part of what gives the city its fantastic climate, and contributes to its reputation as a popular tourist destination. However, the hot weather isn''t the only reason why Sousse makes the perfect holiday destination ? here is a guide to a few of the city''s other delights.

Getting in and out of Sousse is extremely easy. The closest airport lies in Monastir; though this is a few miles from the city itself there are regular buses running between the two locations ? some hotels even offer a shuttle-bus from the airport as part of your accommodation. You can also bus, train, or even drive to Sousse (though it is worth noting that the city''s roads can be confusing for the un-initiated, and they are often very crowded).

Within the city itself the easiest way to get around is by taxi ? they are extremely cheap, the drivers are almost always extremely friendly, and you''ll be guaranteed not to get lost on your way. It is worth confirming with the driver beforehand if he''ll charge you per-person though!

If you''re staying near the beach, and therefore in the most touristy part of town, then a great way to see the sites and soak up the atmosphere is walking. If you want a really unique way to see the city though then one of the best options is to take a horse-and-cart ? it''s often possible to get a great deal on these too.

When it comes to booking your Sousse accommodation you''ll probably end up in a high-rise hotel. These are as varied as you''d expect, it''s a good idea to read a few candid reviews of them from websites like Trip Advisor to avoid nasty surprises upon arrival! Most of these hotels have a great location, and the added benefit of being able to choose all-inclusive and not have to worry about food and drink.

For clean (though basic rooms) and good food there are several options available. The Caribbean Village Riviera, El Mouradi Palace and Marhaba Imperial are all worth considering, they also have their own private beach so you can avoid hagglers.

One must-see location within Sousse is its Medina. This is a walled area in the centre of the city which is full of unusual Tunisia shops and attractions like the Mosaic Museum or the Tunisia House Museum. The best way to avoid getting lost in the Medina, and to ensure you see all the sites, is to go on a guided tour.

If you fancy venturing outside the city then Port El Kantaoui might be worth considering. This is a purpose-built tourist resort, which has some pros and cons. Because its purpose-built its extremely beautiful, and you''ll be guaranteed to find everything you want in one place. However, it can feel a little fake and touristy.
