Flowers are astonishingly important to many people''s lives. While they can sometimes bring on unwanted hay fever, they generally have the ability to completely uplift a person or make a home look all the more inviting, and as soon as they start cropping up everywhere we know that spring is here at long last. Generally speaking, flowers can have multiple uses other than the ones which first spring to mind, such as the notion of a bunch of flowers as a gift to a host or a loved one, and there are few things which bring such happiness just by the way they look or are presented. Sometimes when you''re trying to show how sorry you are, or if you''re just being friendly, flowers can say things easier than words. Of course, there are also the countless foodstuffs which are related to different species of flower. The one that springs to mind first of all is honey, which bees make by a mutually beneficial process involving the collection of nectar while the flower loads pollen onto their backs. Furthermore, tons of food types are either made from or actually are flowers. If you think about broccoli or cauliflower which you might be likely to see on your own dinner table, are in fact the flower parts of a plant, getting their seeds out and about the place through being edible rather than attempting to attract bees. Basic vegetables aren''t the only foodstuff to be connected with flowers, however. Saffron, the most expensive spice available, is made from the dried and crushed stigma, or receptor of pollen, of the crocus flower, and other classy flower spices include such delicacies as clovers and capers. Fans of beer and traditional ales will be familiar with the process of using hops, another type of flower, to make the drink. Although the active fermenting ingredient is yeast, the inclusion of hops is what furnishes beer with its distinctive and bitter taste. Widely speaking, however, the predominant use of flowers is to make a front room look a bit nicer, or to say something which is better gotten across in a gift than in words. A well chosen bouquet or nicely arranged bunch can make the difference between a house being a home, or it could turn a normal dinner into a special and romantic evening. There''s no better time of year than spring in which to be giving people wild flowers, as their natural charm and beauty is enough to bring potentially much-needed colour and life into a room. So if you''re at a loss as to what flowers to get someone, pick something seasonal and fresh, such as daffodils, fox-gloves, or tulips.
