Things to see on Lanzarote

By: Sal Greet

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, closer to Africa than it is to most of Europe. Thanks in part to the proximity to Africa Lanzarote benefits from a warm climate year round, with scorching summers making way to very mild winters, ensuring that the island is a popular destination for both summer holidays and escaping the British Winter alike. Here is a brief overview of Lanzarote.

There is only 5.5 inches of average annual rainfall on Lanzarote, so getting caught in the rain is unheard of in the summer season, and a rare occurrence even in winter.

Lanzarote was a tiny island until just a few hundred years ago, when a volcanic eruption left black volcanic rock that extended the island dramatically. The evidence of this is still clear to this day, and gives Lanzarote a strikingly unique appearance ? you get a great view of this as you arrive on the plane.

The ''lunar'' landscape created by the volcano is particularly dramatic in some parts of the island, and a great way to experience this is at the Timanfaya National Park. Timanfaya is the name of the active volcano in the centre of the park, which now has a visitor centre built on top of it!

Highlights include eating food barbecued over volcanic vents, and the party piece of the tour guides: a bucket of water is thrown down a vent, only to emerge as steam some 6 seconds later!

Elsewhere on the island, you can experience a bit of high culture at the house of perhaps the most notable citizen of Lanzarote in recent history, the late Cesar Manrique. Cesar Manrique was a friend and contemporary of Picasso, a lesser known but notably successful artist who was born in Lanzarote and stayed there his entire life.

The house of Cesar Manrique looks like it has been lifted straight out of a Bond film. Starting with a volcanic bubble in the rocks, Manrique constructed a fantastic house, which is open to the public nowadays, and functions both as a museum and gallery for Manrique art. A must see on Lanzarote.

There are a great many other attractions on the island, but one proviso that should be made is that taking in these sites is a lot easier if you have the use of a car. Thankfully, there are plenty of options for car hire - established holiday companies like Thomas Cook have now entered the market, making it easy to secure your hire car online along with the rest of your holiday preparations.
