Three Indian Holiday Ideas

By: Cristopher Mentkowski

If you are new to the delights of India and unsure about where to start exploring, here are some great holidays sure to tickle your traveller's fancy.

1. Musical magic

Indian music, when played by experts, is ambrosia to the ears. What better way to begin educating yourself in the country's culture than to attend a local musical event and listen to the strains of the sitar or the hypnotising rhythm of the tabla? If popular culture is more up your street, then there are plenty of great festivals to choose from ? Jaisalmer in Rajasthan holds the Desert Festival every year in January of February, which combines a stunning setting with music and dancing into the night.

2. Partying under the stars

One of the world's top party locations, Goa is favoured by hippies, rockers and gap-year students alike. Its reputation began to spread across the world in the '60s, when crazy monthly full moon parties were the scenes of ultimate devilry and debauchery. The state still hosts some of the best full moon parties in India, as well as some spectacular annual events like Goa Carnival. Held on the days leading up to Ash Wednesday, this festival is a real feast for the eyes, with colourful crowds, dancing and wonderful music.

3. See the sights

India has so many beautiful mountains, verdant valleys, dry deserts and lush forests that it's hard to know where to start sight-seeing. Try taking the Toy Train to Darjeeling, passing through the world famous tea gardens and miles of imposing pine forest. Once there you can see the third-highest mountain in the world, as well as sampling a great variety of teas. Kerala is also a great place to see some of the most beautiful sights that the country has to offer. Take a guided tour along its tropical backwaters, or hire a car and visit its network of quaint villages.

Other top tourist attractions include playing golf on the world's highest course, snorkelling in the Andaman Islands or trekking in Sikkim. Bu whatever you decide to do, India has enough variety to tantalise all tastes and temperaments.
