Three Rivals to the iPhone

By: Porter Ivrin

After three years of being top of the smart phone market, there''s signs that Apple''s iPhone may have its work cut out this year if it wants to maintain its position as market leader. 2009 was the year when the opposition came out fighting, and it looks like there''s going to be more of the same this year.

Enhanced mobile broadband and the development of smart new operating systems means Apple''s rivals will probably eat into market share this year. If you''re looking to join the smart phone revolution, but you''re considering alternative for the iPhone, then here are three smart phones that you might be interested in.

Blackberry Bold 2 (9700)

The latest installment from the Blackberry Bold line improves on its predecessor with a finer screen resolution, better battery life and WiFi capability. As you''d expect from Blackberry, it''s still very much a business handset, but it''s one of the top of its class.

The new model has a few consumer friendly offerings to go with its business appeal, with advanced multimedia and app usage. It also comes with a 3.2 mega pixel camera, which, although similar to the Blackberry Tour 9360, is still quite unusual for business phones.

Nokia n900

Late 2009 was an exciting time for smart phones, and the Nokia n900 was considered a particularly big launch. It was the only smart phone to use the new Maemo 5 Linux operating system upon its release. The advanced operating system''s performance is enhanced by a quick 600 MHz processor.

At 181g, some critics have said the n900 is a little heavy for a smart phone, but its bulk means it can support a dual LED 3.5 inch touchscreen display while housing a 5 megapixel camera. If you''re interested in the Nokia n900, then take a look at a plan from Vodafone.

Motorola Milestone

iPhone may be winning the style stakes, but it''s not all about how your phone looks ? operating systems are becoming much more carefully considered by consumers. Microsoft might have a monopoly on home computers, but Google made a splash in 2009 with the introduction of the Android OS on the Motorola Milestone.

The hardware isn''t bad either. As well as housing the most eagerly anticipated OS on the market, the phone comes with a 3.7 inch touch screen, full QWERTY touchpad, 5MP camera, WiFi 3G and a 600 MHz processor. It''s also famed for its long lasting battery life.
