Three bits of travel insurance advice that could save you a packet

By: Andreas Emami

Put street thieves down. The police South East Asian communist states deserve a mention. Large red buttons on space ships labelled 'self-destruct' definitely get the nod. Travel insurance also needs to be entered onto this list of things you shouldn't mess with. Many might laugh at the association. But just think: you get jumped in Vietnam, you limp to the police station, but the police seem disinterested so you shout at the guy behind the desk. Suddenly you're bleeding. And then you have to foot the bill for medical attention because you don't have the right travel insurance. It could happen to you. As for the spaceship, well, I don't think space is covered in most policies. Have a think about the following points when buying travel insurance:

1. Get Annual cover for a year's worth of protection without the rigmarole of buying insurance every time you plan a holiday. This type of policy also suits those who travel more than twice a year. The problem is that each individual trip with annual cover can't be longer than 30 days, so it's not suitable for a 6 month round the world tour.

2. Skiing and snowboarding are activities which need to be insured with optional extra cover on a standard policy or with a dedicated ski policy. A normal travel insurance policy won't cover you for injuries suffered on the slopes or the loss of ski equipment. Sometimes with this category of holiday insurance the big names in the business won't necessarily be the most competitive, instead look to specialists in winter sports for the best premiums and the most dynamic cover.

3. The excess limits on a policy catch people out whether it is travel insurance or car insurance. They can be high and expose you to a hefty bill before the remainder of your claim will be settled. Going for a more expensive policy with a lower excess is often the wise choice to make.
