Time for Stockholm

The Swedish capital of Stockholm is not so much one great city, but a whole collection of islands which together make a lively and cosmopolitan destination. Made of fourteen islands connected by bridges, across the city you''ll find an interesting and captivating range of sights, all of which combine modern, innovative architectural styles with the fairytale towers from days of yore.

As soon as you step off the plane and breathe in the Stockholm air, you''ll notice what sets it apart from almost any other city in the world: its fresh air. As a third of the city is made of waterways and another third of green space, it is easy to understand why.

As well as the natural beauty of the archipelago itself, when you visit Stockholm you''ll be able to open your eyes to its spectacular man-made sights. Get out and about, and visit the City Hall as well as the Royal Palace and the famous royal family''s residence at Drottningholm Palace where you can observe at first hand the age-old traditions of the Swedish monarchy.

Visit the Vasa museum and you''ll be rewarded with the sight of its seventeenth century warship, whilst the Skansen open air museum similarly offers a unique experience. Meanwhile around the old town of Gamla stan you can explore narrow streets and houses which date all the way back to the Middle Ages.

Visiting the shops is a great experience, and a fantastic way to while away the hours when you''re not exploring the city''s historic and cultural spots. Sweden is a world leader when it comes to innovative, exciting design. You''ll see just why in many of the shops around and about the place, where clothes and home decor items will be on offer which may make perfect gifts for you to take home to your loved ones. Hand-crafted glassware is a particular speciality.

The old town is filled with locals trying to sell tourists local wares to take home. Similarly on Vasterlanggatan and the street around Osterlanggatan you''ll find souvenirs and handicrafts on offer. Meanwhile the pedestrianised area around Drottninggatan and the SoFo district are rather trendy places where you''ll find something that''s right for you.

When you tire of all the walking around, seeing the sights and enjoying the shopping, you can enjoy some fine food at Stockholm''s excellent eateries. As well as the standard English-style pubs and Asian restaurants, you''ll find some quality, distinctive establishments. During the daytime, taking a break for coffee at a cafe is a common practice, locally known as fika.
