Time for an upgrade

By: Porter Ivrin

When it comes to renewing your contract, it can be tempting to settle for a bottom of the range phone. Having a small computer about your person isn''t necessarily what you want to be doing, especially when you can have a simpler handset that does the basic functions of calling, texting, and maybe working as an alarm sometimes.

But as soon as you see the variety of options to choose from, it might be harder to keep hold of your simple tastes. A handset that does the absolute minimum can be a bit dull when compared to something that will perform the tasks of several separate gadgets from one single handset.

The Samsung Galaxy, although not yet officially available in this country, is definitely well worth looking into. What''s immediately staggering is its impressive list of capabilities with regards to multimedia, with its high resolution photo and video camera, its enormous touch screen, and a huge 16GB of internal memory to play with.

But it''s not just these statistics which you get in the brochures that are the most impressive thing about this model. Not only is the internet easily accessible, but so are a bunch of other useful bits and pieces: with apps which link you directly to train times and GPS maps, it''s going to be very difficult to get lost ever again.

If you''re looking for something a bit more social media-focused, then have a look at the HTC Desire. Like the Galaxy, this is made up of ''Android software'', which basically means you can customise the screen to look exactly how you want, but it''s also got some great extra features.

Once you''ve got your address book how you''d like it, you can then link all your contacts to their email, Facebook and Twitter feeds, giving you the option to see updates as they come in rather than having to trawl the net and go to each site individually, and making emails and messages a whole lot easier to get hold of.

A much smaller but equally effective piece of technology can be found if you look at some of what Nokia has to offer in the same area. If you want something that isn''t a bit of a brick but still has that crystal clear display and touch screen ability, have a look at some of these more compact models of smart-phones.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of high-tech, advanced mobile phone handsets. Some of them may be a bit chunkier whilst others have a bit less internal memory, but as long as you do your research and see which type would be best for you, you''d be hard pushed to not to be able to get something that would satisfy your requirements.
