Top Krakow tourist attractions

Krakow is famed for its medieval architecture and preserved medieval city streets. One of medieval highlights of the city, and now a UNESCO world heritage site, is the Rynek Glowny, or main market square. It remains virtually as it was during the 13th century.

Visitors flock to the Muzeum Czartoryskich each year to see one of the most famous paintings in the world. This museum is home to Landscape with the Good Samaritan by Rembrandt. And if this is not enough, it also houses Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci as well as a fine collection of ancient European, Oriental and Middle Eastern art and artefacts.

The market square is always busy, and draws tourists and locals to this area. One of the most popular buildings on the square is the 16th century Cloth Hall, the Sukiennice. There is much to see and do at the Sukiennice, which is bustling with delicious eateries and coffeee houses, as well as plenty of market stalls.

Krakow has long been a city of learning and its most famous university is also one of the top two oldest museums in Europe. Parts of the 14th century Uniwersytetu Jagiellonskiego, or Jagiellonian University, were sadly destroyed during World War II, but may parts still remain and you can visit the University Museum to find out more about its history.

The Kosciol sw Wojciecha, or St Adalbert Church, is another of the impressive and beautifully preserved buildings that stands on the main market square of Krakow. It was built during the 10th century and is one of the oldest and best loved churches in the city. The gothic Church of St Mary, or Kosciol Mariacki, can be found nearby and it is home to the largest gothic altarpiece in the world.

The fabulous museum of Zamek Krolewski was the home of Polish royalty from the 11th to the 17th century. As well as holding the crown treasury and armoury you can also view the royal apartments to see how the Polish royal family would have lived, and you can also enjoy their collection of Oriental art pieces.

Religion is an important part of Polish life, and this can be seen in the number of churches and cathedrals that dot the streets of Krakow. The most impressive cathedral in the city is the Katedra Wawelska, where the Polish royal family were crowned, and also buried since the founding of the cathedral during the 11th century.

Krakow is home to the Polish National Museum, or Muzeum Narodowe. This museum is unusual in that it houses exhibits in buildings all across the city, However, you will find its main collection inside its main building which is located at Aleja 2 Maja 1. Here you will find a superb collection of works by 20th century Polish artists.
