High up on the eastern coast of Spain is the small municipality of Tossa de Mar. Situated exactly between Barcelona and the French border, Tossa is a small fishing village that has become a popular tourist destination, but there is much more to do than simply relax on the beach. Admittedly, the beaches of Tossa de Mar are as fine as any you will find in the world. The Platja Gran, the main beach in Tossa is closed off at one end by a medieval castle that dominates the coastline. Le Mar Menuda is on the other side of the bay but quite small, less than two hundred metres long and can get crowded. The final is El Codolar, which is behind the walls and quite small. Temperatures in Tossa rarely drop below 15 degrees, even in winter, and the sea retains a pleasant warmth all year round. Generally speaking the beaches are most crowded in the summer months, but in early June and late September there is still plenty of heat in the air and you can find a bit more peace and quiet. Just off the beaches are a host of restaurants, where, if you get the right one you can find fish pulled from the sea by a few of the local fishermen who still fish the coasts off Tossa de Mar. Whilst the main attraction of Tossa is the beach, the locals are keen to point out that there is much more to the area than just the sand and the sea. The region has a rich artistic history and if you look carefully, in some of the less touristy locations, you can easily find beautiful pieces of Catalan art for much less than you would pay on the sea front. If you''re travelling to Tossa in June or September there are a number of festivals which are worth experiencing. The National Day of Catalunya is on the 11th September, whilst the Night of Saint Joan is the evening of the 23rd June, though there are celebrations on the 24th as well. Both are well worth a look. Just a few hundred yards from the coast, the land around Tossa becomes hilly and heavily wooded. The locals claim to have found over one hundred different species of medicinal plants in the hills around Tossa. If you fancy a break from the beach, a walk in the woodlands is highly recommended. Girona airport is some distance from Tossa de Mar, but there are good transport links that aren''t too expensive. If you''re looking for a beach holiday with a little something extra, Tossa de Mar is a great pick.
