Tourist Attractions in Venice Article

By: Thanh Rabuse

Venice, in Italy, is one of the most unique and wonderful cities in the world, famed for its canals, gondolas, and stunning architecture. If you fancy taking a romantic break, there can be few destinations that are more appropriate.

Boat tours of the islands of Torcello, Burano, and Murano are available twice daily between the months of April and November. The tours take about three and a half hours, and depart from Campo St. Luca.

If you want to find out a little about the history of this great city, then you might want to go on a guided tour with a licensed tour guide. The guides are all licensed, and highly knowledgeable, and this can be a great way to see the sights and hear the stories.

One of the best ways to see the city in the round is to hop on a gondola and take a tour of the Grande Canal. This is particularly beautiful by night, when all the architecture is lit up and reflected in the water.

The church of Chiesa dei Frari in Campo dei Frari, often referred to as simply the Friari, is a truly stunning sight to behold. Originally built in the 13th century, it was replaced by the much larger building that stands there today in the 15th century. Here, you can see several masterpieces by the likes of Titian, Donatello, and Giovanni Bellini.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Campo San Rocco is an awe inspiring building with huge marble columns on the outside and an interior decorated by Tintoretto, who spent over 23 years of his life painting the inside of this school. As well as some amazing paintings, there are also some interesting wood carvings, including a surprisingly convincing fake book collection.

With a giant Verrocchio statue in its centre, the Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo civic square in Campo dei San Giovanni e Paolo is well worth a visit. Also nearby is the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, a 13th century cathedral with an impressive collection of monuments on show.

The unique octagonal design of the church of Santa Maria della Salute, on Campo della Salute, dominates the view of the Grande Canal from the lagoon. Designed by Longhena in the Baroque style and built partly from marmorino, which is a type of brick covered with marble dust, it is truly a must see.
