Travelling to Cologne on a budget

By: Caron Kristan

With most Britons still feeling the pinch from the recession, many are looking to cut back on luxuries such as foreign travel. However, there is no reason why you cannot have a great time abroad without breaking the bank. Here is a guide to free attractions in Cologne, Germany.

The Hohenzollern Bridge is just a stones throw from the famous Kolner Dom, and serves as both a railway bridge and a pedestrian bridge over the Rhine. From the pedestrian walkway, you can see some magnificent views of the city and the river. The bridge was rebuilt after World War II, and attached to the railings you will see lots of padlocks inscribed with names, pictures, and dates.

Dating back to 1863, Cologne''s oldest city park, the Botanischer Garten und Flora is the perfect place for a relaxing stroll or a quiet sit down. Here you can take a relaxing walk past a wide variety of flowers, tall trees, ornate fountains and birds, not to mention several greenhouses that are full of exotic plants from around the world. During the summer it is open from 8am to 9pm, and in the winter it is open from 8am until nightfall.

St. Gereon Church is one of twelve major Romanesque churches in Cologne, and features some absolutely breathtaking architectural features. Here, you can also find some amazing stained glass windows and a stunning Pieta statue.

A popular student hang out, especially in the warm summer months, is the Aachener Weiher Park and pond. Its location just next to the University of Cologne means that you will often find students hanging out and listening to music, having a picnic and enjoying the large, cooling pond that lies at the centre of this extensive green space.

Of all of the fabulous parks in Cologne, the Rhienpark is by far the biggest. Its situation along the riverbank of the Rhine means that the views are incredible, especially as the sun comes down over the river. There is a sculpture garden to explore as well as riverside beaches, walks and playgrounds to keep the children entertained.

Take a visit to the Planetarium in Cologne and you can learn all about the cosmos, look through powerful telescopes, which can take pictures of the space above us, and take a guided tour too. Set up in 1960, the Planetarium is housed within a historic school building and is beautiful to look at in its own right, with two magnificent domes towering over the building.

By far one of the most popular, and it has to be said, most impressive buildings in all of Cologne is the Kolner Dom. A stunning Gothic cathedral, finally finished in 1880, when it was one of the tallest buildings on earth, it is now an official UNESCO world heritage site. If you are feeling fit, you can climb all the way to the top for the best views in all of Cologne.
