Unearth Turkey''s Mediterranean treasure trove

By: Haywood Estok

Aptly named the ''Turquoise Coast'', Turkey''s Mediterranean shoreline, with its magnificent golden beaches, striking headlands and crystalline waters, has certainly made its mark as an authority on the sun and sand holiday. Having for the main part left its fishing past behind, the region has, for the last few decades, embraced the influx of visitors who come annually to soak up the unsurpassable climate and relax in the resplendent paradise of the tourist-tailored Turkish Riviera. Yet whilst the thriving resorts of Marmaris and Alanya offer all a package holiday could need, the real beauty lies in the sheer variety and cultural history that this region has to offer.

Visitors to Turkey''s self-styled Riviera will more often than not start out in the region''s capital, Antalya. More than just a stop-over destination for those heading to surrounding Turkish resorts, Antalya is the true gateway city to exploring the delights of the self-styled Riviera. The largest city in southern Turkey and the region''s beating heart, this flourishing metropolis offers a captivating mixture of ancient Ottoman history and contemporary Turkish culture. As such, it is well worth spending more than a simple day trip to the artisan market to become acquainted with its exquisite architecture, vivacious nightlife and first-rate archaeological museums.

Heading out to the west of Antalya, you will hit the visually striking Roman city of Side. A former fishing port, Side (pronounced see-deh) has in recent years become a shining example of the rapid transformation from Turkish small-town to slick and sophisticated tourist haven. Nevertheless, it''s abundance of remarkable Hellenistic ruins scattered along the city''s verges, and breath-taking waterside vista of the Temple of Apollo, make it an unmissable destination for those in search of both beach-holiday and history.

Like Side, Kas, on the south-west part of the country, hits the right note for holiday-makers and history buffs alike. Less saturated by the tourist industry than the former, perhaps owing to its stonier bays, this seaside town has managed to preserve much of its original charm. Soak up the relaxed atmosphere in one of the many local tea gardens and bars, or uncover what remains of Antiphellos; Kas'' preceding Lycian settlement.

Those in search of adventure and outdoor activities may want to continue along the Lycian Way to the bay-side town of Fethiye. Nestled within a natural harbour, the surrounding natural environment offers its guests a range of sports from yachting to paragliding and even hiking. Away from the original town, the surrounding area offers a variety of interesting attractions, one of which being the region''s very own ghost town, Kayakoy.

Beyond the more prevailing destinations, Olympos serves up something different altogether. Located in a dramatic rugged setting, this secluded spot has cultivated a backpacker ambience that is far removed from the well-trodden tourist path. The signature Roman ruins strewn along the pebbled beach may evoke an ancient era, but the renowned nightlife here is as lively as it comes.

Finally, heading over towards the Syrian border, we come to Antakya, or as it is known locally, Antioch. This fascinating city has endured a legacy of Roman occupation, Arab raids and Christian crusades, and its varied history still imbues the cobbled streets to this day. Head to the city''s historic quarter to sample traditional dishes and chat with the locals.

For those hoping to become acquainted with Turkey''s Mediterranean gems, it still holds true that the most cost effective option is the package holiday. The popularity of this region means that during the summer months the Riviera can become rather saturated with the European influx. As such, it''s worth trying to avoid high season and the prices that come with it.
