Verona hotels: An overview of the historic walled city of Verona

By: Caron Kristan

Verona is a city in northern Italy, in the province of Veneto, and is famous as being the setting for Shakespeare''s Romeo and Juliet. The ancient walled city of Verona enjoyed glory days throughout the medieval and into the Renaissance period. Today, the rich history of Verona offers plenty to see and do for tourists.

Although not as popular as nearby Venice, many return from a tour of Italy favouring Verona of the two cities as a more relaxed and less crowded place to visit. As you might expect, there are a good selection of Verona hotels on offer through operators like Octopus Travel that can cater for travellers on a range of different budgets.

The architectural beauty of Verona is one of the principal assets of the city, and has resulted in World Heritage status being bestowed by UNESCO. The remains of a Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st Century BC - the Arena ? are to this day the site of entertainment, and often the venue for opera. This amphitheatre is the third largest of its kind in Italy, and while only a fa?ade of the exterior remains, the interior is very well preserved.

Many of the original Roman structures were destroyed in medieval times by earthquake, and the aftermath of this event resulted in the construction of much of what is now left of the old walled city.

The Castelvecchio is a 14th Century castle which sits on the banks of the river Aldige, and is now home to the city''s art museum. There is a good selection of mediaeval and renaissance paintings within, with the ramparts and fortifications of the castle in themselves presenting a good site to explore.

What was the forum in Roman times is now the Piazza delle Erbe, a square that continues to be one of the focal points of the city. Towering over the Piazza delle Erbe is The Lamberti Tower (Torre Lamberti), one of the tallest towers in Verona. The clock tower offers excellent views not just of the Piazza delle Erbe below, but right across the city.

There are many historical features of interest in the Piazza delle Erbe, one of the most striking (and in fact the oldest) being the Madonna Verona, a sculpture standing atop a fountain that was constructed in 380 AD. All of the many historical attractions of the Piazza delle Erbe have recently benefitted from refurbishment and restoration work.

To find put more about the other attractions, historical and otherwise, to be enjoyed when you stay in Verona hotels have a quick look online at the sites of operators such as Octopus travel for a quick overview.
