One of the most beautiful and memorable cities in Europe, Vienna is a great place to go sightseeing, with a sublime mix of Roman and Gothic architecture and many unique buildings. Perhaps the best way to get a glimpse of the city in all its glory is to board one of the trams that circle the city centre. Most of the major landmarks are visible from the tram, including the Rathaus, the Parliament, and the University. If you want to see some truly impressive Gothic architecture, you should pay a visit to the Stephansdom in Stephensplatz. Among its many attractive features, the massive 450 foot tower and the stunning tiled and glazed roof are truly wondrous to behold. If you like visual art, then you should not miss out on the chance to see some of the finest works by artists such as Caneletto, Raphael, and Rembrandt at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Burg Ring. They also have a hugely impressive collection of ancient Roman and Greek artefacts on show. The Imperial Palace, also known as the Hofburg, is a massive building with a number of courtyards and wings. Of particular note are the Imperial Court Chapel, where the world famous Vienna Boys Choir have been known to perform, and the Lithurgical and Secular Treasury, where the Imperial Jewels are kept. The Vienna State Opera House was opened way back in 1869 with a performance of Mozarts Don Giovanni. It took quite a battering during the bombing raids of the second world war, but was reopened in 1955 and has played an important role in the cultural life of the city ever since. Mozart fans might want to make a bee line for the Figarohaus, which is now a museum dedicated to the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Here you can look at some of his original manuscripts, and listen to his music on headphones. If you are looking for a nice, picturesque place to take a break, the City Park in Ringstrasse is the place to go. Built in 1862 and based upon a sketch by the landscape artist Joseph Selleny, it is the perfect place to feed the ducks and enjoy the sunshine.
