Visit Dublin for a relaxing break

Say what you will about the recession, but you cannot claim that it has not had a universal impact on almost every quarter of British society. However, one cannot say that it has been entirely bad.

As a response to the crisis many people are staying in and refusing to spend. To combat this prices are being brought down. Funnily enough, despite no-one wanting to spend, there has never been a better time to do so.

The best example of this is the travel industry. We have long fancied a budget holiday in the UK and at one point it was impossible to move for companies offering cheap flights and budget deals. Now however, these companies are in serious danger from the recession. The trick to know though is that this can be a good thing for you.

Now, these budget companies were never overly expensive to begin with but the recession has made things even better. A few years ago you could expect to pay around ?60 a night for a threestar hotel in the city centre. Octopus travel are now offering at least four three star Dublin hotels for under ?40.

And why wouldn''t you want to travel to Dublin? There is a vibrant nightlife in Dublin and it is reputedly one of the most youthful cities in Europe - with estimates of 50% of inhabitants being younger than 25. Furthermore in 2007, and again in 2009, Dublin was voted the friendliest city in Europe. Like the rest of Ireland, there are pubs right across the city centre.

The internationally best-known area for nightlife is the Temple Bar area just south of the River Liffey. It was developed as Dublin''s cultural quarter (an idea proposed by local politician Charlie Haughey), and does retain this spirit as a centre for small arts productions, photographic and artists'' studios, and in the form of street performers and intimate small music venues.

Flying to Dublin has never been easier and it is still incredibly cheap to do so out of airports like Liverpool, Gatwick and Luton. The city itself is packed full of things to do and despite its reputation as being somewhere that can be quite expensive, providing you don''t go insane you can do the place for not a lot of money and still enjoy it.

Ultimately, the recession is still basically a bad thing overall. Millions are unemployed and the country''s economy has been battered, but if you have a couple of hundred quid lying around then a quick holiday abroad may not be a bad idea at present.
