Holidays can be expensive at the best of times, and with the recession showing few signs of abating, many holidaymakers are being forced to cut back on their foreign travel. The beachfront is very much the focal point of the town of Calella, so much so that very few holidaymakers venture outside this area. The old part of town features plenty of narrow streets, bodegas, and tapas bars, as well as over 400 shops. The main pedestrianised shopping street is Carrer de l''Esglesia, and here you can find all manner of boutiques, jewellers and souvenir shops. The pretty Santa Maria parish church, which features a baroque entrance flanked by sculptures of the twelve apostles, is well worth a visit. Another lovely old building in the area is the Casa dels Salvadors, which dates back to the 1300s, and was formerly the home of the illustrious Salvador Saga family. Back in the days before the internet, mobile phones, and even the telephone, people used to communicate message via semaphore. You can see some remaining semaphore towers in Calella that stretch all the way to the border with France. They date back to mid-19th century and are an impressive sight. Learn all about Calella and its history by paying a visit to the local museum. With displays and an extensive array of exhibits you will find out all about Calella and its people and how their way of life has changed over the centuries up to the present day. If relaxing on the beach gets a little to hot for you then head to the centrally located Dalmua Park. Here you can cool off under the shade of the many pinewood trees, children can play in the playgrounds and there are plenty of refreshing fountains to enjoy too. Calella is easy to navigate by car, bike or on foot, or via public transport. But one of the most pleasant ways to see the sights is to hop on board the tourist mini train. It circles the town every half hour or so and is a relaxing way to get around without having to drive or use pedal power.
