Washington DC on the north-eastern coast of the United States is a city that is synonymous with politics, in fact, it is a city that is so entirely devoted to politics that at weekends it seems a long way from being the capital of one of the most powerful nations on earth. Washington is also a fantastic tourist destination, though often put in the shade by New York just down the coast. It is a five hour flight from the UK, and flights across the Atlantic are remarkably cheap. There are two things that strike you about Washington as soon as you arrive that will stay with you forever. The first is the extent to which the famous locations such as the White House, the Washington Monument on the Mall, the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill are so incredibly familiar and yet strange because you see them as a whole, not just from a fixed angle on tv. The second is the incredible scale of the city. The buildings are enormous, often clad in white marble with pillars deliberately reminiscent of ancient Rome and you genuinely feel dwarfed in their presence. The Supreme Court building in particular is immense, and more than worth a view. Of course, to every rule there is an exception and when it comes to Washington, that exception is the White House. The White House is a surprisingly small and unimposing building ? except for the armed guards that surround it. Still, you absolutely have to have your picture taken in front of it if you visit. If you really want to have a great experience in Washington you may need to do a little forward planning. You can pre-book tours of things like the National Archives (definitely worth a look) and the White house and the Capitol, but because they''re so popular, if you don''t book early (and get lucky) you may not get the chance at all. As well as its buildings, Washington also boasts some beautiful open land. The most famous of which has to be Arlington National cemetery. Set back from the shores of the Potomac, just in site of the Washington Monument, Arlington is the cemetery for the men and women who die fighting for America. It is a humbling and touching place. Washington is a city which appeals at all times of year. The buildings never lose their charm and there is enough to do inside and out that whatever the weather you''ll be able to keep yourself occupied. Of course, being the capital of the USA, the hotels are incredible so wherever you stay you''re guaranteed a great time.
