We''re going to Ibiza

By: Jarrett Altrogge

During the 1950s and 60s, Ibiza''s art culture flourished, and the island became a favored resort location for Europe''s hippies and flower children. Today, the island has a reputation for being the ?party island? of the Balearics.

The easiest way to see the island is to hire a car in advance of your arrival. You can pick up your car at the airport, just outside Ibiza Town (Eivissa). Currently, several main roads lead out of the city and cross the island to the more remote western and northeastern beaches. The price of hiring a car will depend on the type of car and season of travel. Most companies offer discounts for multi-day rentals.

The top tourist attractions on the island are easily accessible by car. Be sure to visit Sant Josep de sa Talaia village, and view the extinct offshore volcano, Es Vedr?. The northeastern village of Sant Joan de Labritja boasts the best beach resorts on the island. And the southeastern municipality of Santa Eul?ria des Riu hosts the large Hippy Markets during the summer months.

Ibiza drivers are considered notoriously bad drivers. Ongoing road construction often leads to poorly marked detours. And especially in the summer months, rowdy tourists under the influence of alcohol often pose dangers on the road. For visitors hiring a car, be sure to select adequate levels of insurance to cover you, your passengers, and a car, in the event of an accident.

Despite the higher dangers of driving in Ibiza, the benefits of seeing the island independently far outweigh the risks. Hiring a car is the most affordable and convenient way of exploring this beautiful island.
