Wedding Lists Explained

By: Tamiko Shirvanian

Some soon to be married couples are a little embarrassed by the idea of a wedding list. There is, however, no other way to ensure that you will not receive multiples of the same gift, a situation that is embarrassing for both parties.

Not knowing, or wanting to presume, what your guests will be willing to spend on gifts is the number one reason why couples are uncomfortable with the concept of a wedding list. However, this problem can be circumvented by asking for a range of gifts with widely differing price tags.

Back in the day, it used to be only the wealthiest society families that would produce a wedding list. However, it has become more popular with the rest of us in recent years, simply because it is the best way to avoid getting swamped in toasters, towels and wine glasses.

One of the more popular approaches to producing a wedding list is to produce a small booklet with photographs and details of gifts that the couple would like, cut out from catalogues and magazines.

Thanks to the internet, it is now a lot easier and cheaper to coordinate a wedding list, as it can be sent out by email, reducing the need for printing and postage. Guests can simply communicate with the families of the bride and groom as to the gifts that they are willing to get, and the whole thing can be sorted out fairly quickly.

Some department stores and internet sites offer custom made wedding list booklets, so that all the gifts can be purchased from the one place and collected or delivered together when the couple come back from their honeymoon.

Some firms will offer extra services as an incentive to use their wedding gift service, for example free delivery, voucher schemes, discounts, invitation inserts, and advice from a bridal consultant.

The purpose of wedding gifts is to help a couple set up their new home. This is why household gifts such as toasters, cookers, fridges, crockery, cutlery, and towels are so popular. However, there are many other types of wedding gift, such as honeymoon fund contributions, charity donations, and vouchers.
