Scotch whisky has been produced in Scotland. Scotland was probably the first country to produce whisky, although the Irish also occasionally lay claim to developing the drink. In the modern world, whisky production takes place across the globe. Canadian and American whisky makers carry on skills that arrived in the New World with the immigration of large numbers of Scots and Irish. Likewise, Whisky is now made in Australia, and production now also takes place in Japan and India. The American spelling of the drink comes from the Irish: ''whiskey''. The Scottish and Canadian spelling is ''whisky''. Both versions are derived from the Gaelic word: ''Uisge Beatha'', which translates as ''water of life''. In Latin, ''water of life'' ? Aqua Vitae ? was the description of distilled alcoholic drinks since at least the 14th century, and no doubt long before. There is a record of whisky production as long ago as 1494, when records show that a monk was ordered to make it for the king. Scotch whisky commonly refers to blended whisky, as opposed to single malt scotch whisky. Single malt is made only with malted barley and water, while blended whisky contains often several single malts, in addition to grain whisky. Grain whisky is produced from unmalted as well as malted barley - and other grains - and is most often used as an ingredient in blended whisky, rather than being a standalone drink. Recently, however, a single grain whisky has been developed. Single malt whisky is the generally regarded as the pinnacle of Scotch whisky. There are in excess of 5000 types of single malt whisky produced in the world ? and 90 percent of these are produced in Scotland. Scotch whisky is prized throughout the world, and compares favourably to the whisky produced in any other country. American Bourbon and Tennessee whiskies are really a different kind of drink altogether. Irish whisky is more like Scotch whisky.
