Smartphones - what to look out for As mobile phones become increasingly like mini-laptops, the number of choices on the market for consumers gets more and more confusing. Running operating systems such as Google Android and Symbian, these phones are able to perform all sorts of tasks from digital camera to wireless internet to entertainment system. The previous checklist of sms/phone/camera capability has been overtaken by the plethora of features out there but take a closer look at some of these phones before being seduced ? do you really need all of them? Here are some tips on what you should look out for when buying a smartphone. - Touchscreen. Touchscreen phones are the latest trend in mobile phones, getting rid of keypad buttons in return for bigger displays which form the phone''s main interface. The sleek aesthetics of a touchscreen phone is enough for many to buy one, but make sure that you''re actually comfortable using a touchscreen before purchasing. Ask some questions - what size are the buttons? Do you need to tap hard to ''press'' a button? Can the sensitivity be adjusted? In many cases a touchscreen is more difficult to use than a normal keypad because of such issues. If you use your phone more to text rather than call, it may be a deal breaker. - Memory. The bigger the memory the faster the phone, so the temptation is usually to go for a phone with the biggest memory you can afford. Bear in mind however that whilst some phones don''t appear to have much built-in memory (128 Mbs is standard), there?is usually an option to buy add-on memory cards later, so you don''t need to shell out for large memory capabilities first off - you can simply add it on as and when you need. - Security. A lot of media coverage about smartphones focuses on the dangers and relative ease of being hacked and getting viruses and whilst uncommon, you should take this into consideration when you buy a smartphone. Some operating systems are more open than others, which is useful because it means third party developers can make applications for them,?making them more flexible.
