What to see and do in Porto

By: Caron Kristan

Porto is the capital of the Northern Region of Portugal and is the second largest city in the country. An industrial centre that has been a centre for trading for centuries, it is also a city that has retained its unique cultural identity and its historical architecture.

The river Douro runs through the city and a great day out is to take a river cruise. Breathtaking views across the river and out to the Atlantic Ocean can be had from the tops of the many hills that abound throughout Porto.

If you want to see historic Porto then look for a Porto hotel that is close to the World Heritage area of the city. This begins down by the river Douro in an area called the Ribeira. Here is where you will find the oldest buildings in the city as well as some stunning views of the river.

Culture vultures should definitely explore the Boavista area of Porto. Boavista is home to the concert hall, the Casa de Musica, literally the House of Music, as well as the Fundacao de Serralves, the Museum of Modern Art at Serralves, which has a beautiful garden where you can relax and soak up the sunshine as well as the art.

The river is spanned by six bridges in total, all connecting Porto to the suburb of Gaia across the water, where you can sample some of the finest port wine in Portugal. Each of the six bridges affords fantastic views of the river too.

Walking up and down the hills of Porto is sure to make you hungry, and fortunately the city is full of places to eat fresh local produce. Head to the Mercado do Bolhao in the centre of the city where you will find a traditional market selling local fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Each July there is a fish festival in Mathosinhos. It is well worth the trip to try out freshly caught fish cooked right in front of you at one of the many street barbeques.

Porto has some famed culinary dishes all its own. A dish you will be hard pressed to find in any other city in the world if Francesinha - a kind of bread toast stuffed with different meats, covered in cheese and cooked in a spicy sauce. Delicious!

Sports fans can check out the Dragao Stadium, which is home to FC Porto and is a feat of modern stadium architecture. FC Porto are a hugely successful team in European football, and if you time your visit right, you might just get to see a Champions League game there too.
