What you can do if your iPhone screen breaks

By: Porter Ivrin

Apple iPhones are completely reliant upon their touch screen interface, so if you drop it and the screen shatters, you will not be able to use the phone at all until you get it fixed.

While the iPhone is guaranteed for a year, you will only get free repairs if the fault was not caused by you. It can cost over 100GBP to get a cracked screen replaced by Apples official service department.

If you are feeling lucky, you could always try taking your broken iPhone into the Apple Store and have the boffins at the Genius Bar take a look at it. If you are very, very lucky, you might get it fixed on the spot for no charge, although you should not expect this to happen.

Third party service centres are often a little cheaper than the official Apple service department, and you might find that you can have your screen replaced for less than a hundred pounds if you shop around.

The cheapest option by far is to buy the replacement parts and fit them yourself. You can find plenty of how to videos on YouTube that show you how to fix things on iPhones, although this is not really recommended unless you have some experience with electronics.

You can buy an entire iPhone replacement parts kit for around 150GBP, but if you just need the screen or the touch panel, you can get these as individual parts for around 30GBP each.

You could always try taking a pre bought replacement screen in with your iPhone to the Apple store, and if their technical staff are not too busy, they might just fit it for you free of charge.

If you know anyone that has experience upgrading computers, then it might be an idea to enlist their help, as fitting replacement parts to an iPhone is much like fitting upgrades to computers such as hard drives, additional memory, or graphics cards, although it is a bit more fiddly due to the smaller size.
