When colors Express Emotions

By: Raelt Woodberry

From years of experience in hanging pictures come about certain rules. Do not hang pictures in all of the walls unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery so keep in mind that hanging a picture on the wall is ideal when the wall seems bare without one. If you are going to hang some pictures consider doing so over a console, a sofa, a server, a small pier table, or in groups.

What follows this is another rule. Take a look at the furniture under the groupings and see to it that the latter is not wider. When you are dealing with pictures that are of varying sizes you can give them a unified look by hanging them closer to each other. Probably you have a prized collection of bird prints but there are no frames that are similar in type and size. When hanging pictures do so according to pleasing geometrics and not frame by frame.

This is not the end of the rules. Never forget that the wall is a frame in itself which serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides even if they are close together. When I talk about pleasing geometry, I mean hanging pictures so that the frames form either a square or a rectangle. It is possible that you have four pictures all framed alike and of the same size you may want hang them geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table, or vertically above a small step table. Hanging pictures using the step pattern should be done only when there is a staircase. As much as possible stick to straight lines meeting at right angles. There is always room for a little regimentation every now and then.

Consider having a series of ever changing pictures accumulated over a lifetime, ones with varying sizes and subjects that come to include old family portraits, prints, reproductions, and originals. For unification it is important to consider framing and matting everything alike when hanging these together. Gold frames were used for 16 prints and a friend matted these in forest green. As they were set against a red wall the look was marvelous. When it came to adding color a friend matted each picture over her sofa a unique shade. The size and subject matter for all of the pictures here were the same.

Have you ever stared at a department store model room and wondered what was missing? When it comes to someone ever sleeping, eating, living, and taking phone calls in that room there are no signs present. Lacking in individuality is the room. This will complete your home.

It is with the department store model that selling furniture is possible but in a home the design works to give you comfort and pleasure. What matters here is that you use a color you like. Remember that the color you select can affect the mood in the room. A color can evoke a particular emotion. Color charts can really help you out when you are looking for just the right color for your space. The choice that matters here is the one you make personally.
