When to Save and When to Spend in Peru

Peru is a vastly varied place, stretching from the hot beaches of the Pacific coast, through the mountains of the Andes, and including in its territory parts of the Amazon rainforest. There are many weird and wonderful species of animal and plant life living within Peru's borders, and that's not including the many weird and wonderful marks of mankind. From the indigenous tribes still living traditional lives deep in the most remote parts of Peru, to the many historic sites that remain from ancient cultures such as the Incas, there is enough to see in Peru to fill the itineraries of even the most demanding traveller.

Having said that, the flipside is that Peru presents very different dangers to travellers than a fully developed Western country would. Local healthcare is not what you would get in the UK, and should you have an accident you would need to be taken to a larger city such as the capital, Lima, to get the care you need ??? and if you've been trekking in the mountains you may well need to be airlifted out. Due to factors such as this, you should not purchase an inadequate travel insurance policy just to save a bit of cash. The money you save will definitely not be worth it when you have to pay thousands of pounds in medical bills because paragliding in Peru is not covered by your policy.

But fortunately there are some things you definitely can save on, notably your accommodation and flights. Peru is relatively cheap to live in, so you will likely find the price of a room favourable anyway. The flight will inevitably be the biggest single expense of a trip to Peru? it is the other side of the world, after all. There are websites that help you to compare all the airlines quickly, which are often the most hassle free way to get the cheapest deal.
