Why choose a SIM only mobile phone deal?

By: Porter Ivrin

The cost of owning and running a mobile phone only seems to increase. However, while the cost of handsets, with all their modern technological features, has been on the rise, you may be forgiven for not noticing that the cost of making actual calls and texts has been steadily dropping year after year.

Do not be fooled by mobile phone deals that offer brand new handsets at absolutely no cost. The truth is that with all contract mobiles you pay for the price of the handset along with the cost of your mobile phone usage as part of your pay monthly phone bill.

The cost of new mobile handsets has been pushed up by the demand for better and faster mobile features and functions such as MP3 players and recorders, built in digital cameras, internet and bluetooth connectivity, and GPS chips.

It is common practice to offer mobile phone contract holders a brand new phone when their contract reaches its end. However, some mobile phone users prefer to keep their original phone, perhaps because they are more familiar with how it works, perhaps for environmentally conscious reasons.

The main reason why people choose to hang on to their handsets when their contract expires is that you can often get a much cheaper tariff if you go for a deal that does not include a new phone. These deals are called SIM only deals.

A SIM only contract can have all the benefits of a standard phone contract, such as inclusive minutes, free texts, or an internet browsing allowance, but with a much lower monthly fee, typically less than half of what you would have to pay if you had got a new phone as part of the deal.

SIM only contracts offer greater freedom to phone users as they are often available as a month by month contract rather than a year-long deal. This way you can cancel whenever you want so long as you give one months notice, so you are not tied to any one provider.

SIM only contracts can be a good alternative to pay as you go deals, as the calls and texts will be much cheaper, and you will not be tied in to the deal for an inordinate length of time. They can be especially effective if you only need the service for a limited time, for example, if you are in a foreign country for a few months, or are waiting for a particular type of new phone to come out.
