Windermere and the Lake District

By: Caron Kristan

Lake Windermere, found at the heart of the Lake District, is one of Britain''s premier tourist attractions and probably its most famous lake. Each year the Lake District attracts 14 million visitors, and the steamers that run on Lake Windermere are the second most popular charging tourist attraction in the UK.

The town of Windermere itself is not actually on the shore of the Lake, though it is just a short walk away. Windermere has become something of a centre for tourism in recent years, as the popularity of the Lake District has grown, driven partially at least by the ''staycation'' in the wake of the recession.

Another factor in the growth of the Lake District as a tourist region has been the interest in some of the great poets and authors who have made their home around the shores of Lake Windermere. Beatrix Potter in particular has become extremely popular with hundreds of thousands of visitors to her family home each year.

Another author who is greatly popular is Arthur Ransom, who based Swallows and Amazons on a combination of Lake Windermere and the Coniston Water. The dozens of islands in the Lake make great places to explore for children, but you''ll need to find a boat in one of the shoreside villages to make the most of them.

As one of Britain''s most stunning natural landscapes, many people who visit the Lake District do so for the nature and the hiking without realising that there is a thriving cultural scene. In the summer months especially there are a string of festivals in some of the bigger towns and they''re definitely worth a look.

Another good venue is the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. The Theatre by the Lake runs productions all year and has a deserved claim to being the most attractively located theatre in the UK.

Not so far from Keswick you''ll also find Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in England and one of the three peaks included in the famous ''Three Peaks'' challenge (where people climb the highest peaks in Scotland, Wales and England in just 24 hours). If you don''t feel quite energetic enough to do all three, you should at least have a go at ''the Pike,'' the view from the summit is amazing.

The Lake District is a great venue for a staycation. In the summer months it offers the perfect mix of culture, nature and beautiful little hotels and pubs make great places to rest after a day walking. If you''re looking for a great holiday, you can''t go wrong with the Lake District.
