Work the bikini this summer

By: Wilber Gjokaj

The great British summer is rather unpredictable. So we need to take every chance we get to find our spot, roll out a towel and get bronzing. Because our weather is generally pretty unimpressive, our bodies don''t get much of an airing meaning we are all a little conscious of parading around in bikinis.

Unlike California Girls, we don''t have the tans, the honed and toned bodies and the dazzling surfer babe hair. So the thought of wearing a bikini, with very little material to play with, for most women bigger than a size 10 is more than just a little unnerving.

But in summer 2010 we trust. The top trends this year are flattering bandeau-style two pieces and the return of the one piece, revamped in a more stylish and striking form.

Whether you are small or large, bandeau tops with halter-shaped straps will accentuate your shape and this year they are ultra sexy with a decidedly 1950s vintage feel. Prints are bold, bright and tropical as well as highly patterned and flowery.

From ''natural'' leopard or snake-skin effects to daring vibrant blues, purples and greens, unleash your wild side with this year''s selection of animal prints. This is one of summer''s key trends so try and incorporate it in your look somewhere.

Beading will add a touch of glamour to your bikini. If you want a rocker feel look for studded beads for the extra wow factor.

Another popular trend in the bikini department is mismatching top and bottoms. This works wonders on pear-shaped women, which let''s be honest, is the most common female shape these days. A bright top with some dark coloured bottoms will draw attention away from large hips and thighs and towards your trim upper half.

If your stomach doesn''t look like a washboard and your worried about too much love in your love handles thankfully 2010 swimwear has come up trumps. One pieces are back. They are no longer granny-pant like. They are now sleek and sexy and most importantly of all, flattering.

If you need extra support go for a halter neck, and bandeau versions are super sexy on smaller busted women. One thing that seems to run throughout the trend is cut-away sections.

Almost all of the latest one-piece styles feature cut-away sections at the waist. This gives the appearance of an hour-glass shape and adds womanly curves to those without them, and slim down women with two many curves, or curves in the wrong places. The also add a touch of Hollywood glamour even to Scarborough or Brighton beaches.
